Happy Year of the Dragon 🐉! I spent this New Year’s Day not taking out the trash, not washing my hair, not taking a nap, not buying books… the list of Chinese superstitions for the new year goes on and on. My parents didn’t really practice any of these, besides the cleaning spree right before the new year. But it’s kind of fun to follow some of them as an adult.

The thing about growing older in the diaspora is that you can suddenly find yourself miles away from the cultural traditions you took for granted as a kid. This year when I visited my parents, I studied the altar they have and I wondered if I should make one, too. Maybe I’d do it all wrong. Is there a WikiHow article on how to set one up? Would it feel like cosplaying my own culture?

But the other thing about growing older in the diaspora is that we are creating our own cultures, where we are. Maybe there is no wrong way. Maybe the ancestors receive our offerings all the same.

Onward, before this devolves into diaspora poetry (somehow, we made it this far without a mention of sliced fruit):
